Great Explorers Of The CBD World

CBD has a very long and saturated history. Humans started cultivating cannabis almost 5000 years ago. But do you know that the true history of CBD began only about 80 years ago?

Dr. Roger Adams
Cannabidiol was first discovered in 1940’s by American organic chemist Dr. Roger Adams and his team at the University of Illinois. They spent several years researching the chemistry of CBD, but its structure was fully clarified only at the beginning of the 1960s.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam
In 1963, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, working in Israel, published a study on cannabidiol, where the complete chemical structure of CBD was defined for the first time. He continued studies of the primary cannabinoids, testing of tetrahydrocannabinol on primates and determined that THC itself is responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana use. Later, in 1980, Dr. Mechoulam and a team of scientists at Sao Paulo Medicine Faculty of Santa Casa performed a double-blind experiment using CBD to treat patients suffering from epilepsy. They found that CBD was effective in preventing or reducing seizures.

Dr. Geoffrey Guy and Dr. Brian Whittle
In 1998, two biotech entrepreneurs, Dr. Geoffrey Guy and Dr. Brian Whittle, founded GW Pharmaceuticals. In 1999, they began first clinical trials, evaluating different cannabinoid formulations as potential therapeutics with an initial focus on the development of an oral mucosal spray with two principal cannabinoid components, cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol.

Stanley Brothers
In 2008 the Stanley Brothers started researching CBD, trying to find a way to help their uncle, diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In 2011 they met Paige Figi and her daughter Charlotte, that suffered from a very rare form of epilepsy. She experienced 300 seizures a day and had failed all pharmaceutical options by the age of 5. The Stanley Brothers created products known as Charlotte’s web, that help to reduce seizures and improve quality of life for people suffering from epilepsy.

Scientists and physicians do not stop studying the medical benefits of cannabis and the last years have seen lots of progress to further define cannabis as medicine and break the prohibition around the plant.
